Care should be taken when buffing stems apart (un-assembled) from the pipe--to preserve the fit of stem to shank to avoid rounding sharp corners. Better to use a masking tape around shank with stem inserted fully into the shank to avaoid a common mistake, and to protect the finish on the wood. Best Wishes, Eric
