When Lightning Strikes
As I walked into the office this morning, I was greeted by an employee under my desk while other faces looked at me with a somewhat annoyed grin. Not entirely unusual, but this was all related to what happened in the office last Thursday - a nice, sunny day, mind you. All of us in the marketing department were working quietly at our desks typing and researching away, preparing for the newsletter. Boxes of estates were waiting on my desk for inspection and evaluation, and then it happened: ZAP-CRACK!!! Lightning had struck our building (a rather odd and unsettling thing with no rain outside). Eric and I walked over to the window to check for a zapped power line, suspicious that a clueless squirrel with a wet tail was attempting some sort of gymnastic feat. Walking downstairs through the shipping department, we were informed that sparks flew from an outlet and scared a few people. We ventured outside to check for a fire, and luckily there was not one. Dennis, previously being a member of the fire department was ready, just in case; he had very much the same reaction as when our peanut butter fondue turned into a latakia-rubber-scented-volcano a few weeks ago.
But I digress, since I'm not in the office on Fridays, the annoyed-yet-smiling faces of my fellow employees had me wondering if my zipper was down, but Eric chimed in with "Can you hear that noise?". When he turned down his music, I heard a horrible buzzing noise coming from under my desk. The lightning had zapped something important and the sound emanating from a little black box my station was (is) something that will call for a bottle of Aspirin to be passed around today. Thankfully I popped in a Miles Davis CD and we are currently cranking up the volume in style. The perfect sort of music for lounging and smoking a pipe, I must say. When Sykes gets back to the office today and finds all of us puffing away while sipping martinis with the lights dimmed, I'm sure he'll understand once he hears the buzzing.
