Joao Reis is a younger (I'm thinking roughly 35) carver out of Lisbon, Portugal, and has studied with the likes of Kai Nielsen, Jorgen Nielsen, Poul Ilsted, and Tom Eltang. Judging from this superlative composition, the lessons have paid off in spades. Indeed, Joao Reis shaping has always impressed me but in recent years he has taken it to a whole new level. The shaping of this Tadpole is imaginative and inspired, breaking from the designs of his teachers and showing a voice which is his own. The engineering, totally in keeping with the standards of his mentors, and showing an attention to detail in keeping with the masters. Unsmoked and licensed to thrill.
