Danish Estates: Tom Eltang Smooth Horn (Late 1990s)
Product Number: 004-001-6609
When Tom elects to create a horn, each iteration I run across has such distance from a previous one that "typical Eltang approach to the horn shape" is one phrase that I am confident that I will never be able to use. What holds true in 2014 was also the rule when this horn was created in the 90s. A couple of weeks ago, I described another smooth, late 90s Eltang Horn, and their shape executions couldn't have been further apart. The previous one featured a quick, near-vertical rise and a push-stem. Here we have a fine study in elongated elegance, the languid, graceful curves which (in part) have made Tom's work legendary are already well in evidence. Take a look at picture #4, is it me, or does that amazing birdseye almost appear to be the surface of a coin tobacco? Tom's combination of mad skills as a pipe maker, and unflagging, long-haul consistency, place him at the very top of the carving pantheon.
