Danish Estates: Preben Holm Hallmark Freehand (H-4) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-001-6746
Many carvers employ their own take on the "melting wax" aesthetic. From the Italians to the Danish, it's usually done by combining dark rusticated finishes with a bit of smooth polish to contrast. Here, however, Preben Holm takes an entirely different approach, realizing the aesthetic by shaping alone. By extending the plateaued briar well beyond the heel, he creates a shape that, indeed, bears a remarkable resemblance to a candle nearing the end of its wick, with melting wax trickling down its form into a large puddle at the base — a puddle that just happens to be covered in swirling whorls of birdseye.
