Personally, I love that Kent engages in this sort of surface ambiguity from time to time. Some pipe makers will let the center panel be one plane, or separate all four, but Kent lets this rim seem to drift off, melting down the left side of the pipe, creating a gentle sense of movement as the pipe drifts off to the left. Opposing that motion is the stalwart bulge on the front of the bowl, surging forward and upwards, seemingly dragging behind it the shank and stem. While not awarded a Butterfly - while the grain is excellent, it’s not quite “there” - in many ways this pipe is a true Kent masterpiece. The shape is deserving of very high recognition within his aesthetic pantheon, and, unquestionably, a brilliant pipe.
