Rustication is great for providing a particularly craggy, stimulating feel in hand. Sandblasting, however, provides a more organic look, allowing the briar's nature to reveal itself better. Combining the two, though more labor intensive, allows for a good dose of either one's best aspects - and that's just what the old Ashton Pebble Shell provided. Deeply rusticated, then sandblasted, it produces cragginess galore, while still allowing all those little hints of ring grain to peek out amongst the countless nooks and crannies.
