English Estates: Barling's Make Ye Olde Wood Billiard (1376) (T.V.F.) (Pre-Transition) (Replacement Stem)
Product Number: 004-002-8477
Behold one of the grails of the collecting world, offered at an immanently affordable acquisition cost. The fact that the Nicols numbering stamp of this pipe begins with a 1 tells us that this pipe was originally made for the European market (little doubt, the story of its travels would be a fascinating one). Depending on the amount of weight you personally assign to a replacement stem, the condition is fairly solid, and that all-important nomenclature stamping is crisp.
We deduct a full point for the presence of a replacement, add that point back in and you have a condition of 4.5/5. Even if (say) a replacement stem bugs you, good wood will always add to a good smoke, and the briar used to make a pre-trans Barling was at least 100 years in age. Sure.
