Charatan pipes are often classic shapes that have as much whimsy as Freehand designs. This particular offering was most likely turned to be a standard shape, but had mirrored shaping on either side of the heel to alter the shape. Possibly there was a visible flaw and the carver decided to remove it while re-shaping the other side as well, or there is always a chance this was made this way from the get-go to fill orders for unusual classics. Charatan collectors love pieces like this.
