About This Pipe
This older Dunhill bears, as expected, an older iteration of this time-honored English marque's stamping system. While the meaning of most of it is pretty clear with a little research - "F/T" means fish-tail bit, and "R" designates a Root Briar finish - the "S" in "LBS" remains a mystery. The "LB" itself refers to the shape, a classic English straight Billiard, but the "S" has simply eluded identification for some time; we've seen it on sandblasts and smooth-finishes alike, so we know it doesn't refer to that aspect, if nothing else. It isn't a sizing thing either, as that's the job of the "4" stamp indicating a Group 4 pipe - although this particular briar is closer in size to a modern Group 6, to tell the truth (Group 5 and 6 stampings weren't introduced until the mid-70s).
