Italian Estates: Ser Jacopo Smooth Bent (Maxima) (L2)

Product Number: 004-006-8631

Ser Jacopo is a company that has a deep seated whimsical affection that, from time to time, emerges conspicuously. Of course, freehands are supposed to be fancifully shaped, but the Ser Jacopo carvers, ever adhering to their own unique tradition, always produce freehands that are sophisticatedly simple and streamlined, or related to some shape that already exist. The carver of this pipe did well to hide his sources, as I (with the help of a one Eric N. Squires) have traced the shape to the little known, rather rare, "Hourglass"-- a distinctly Italian melding of the Dublin's upper bowl and the lower bowl of either a Volcano or Brandy (Volcano, in this case). Even though the classification exists, with its tapered waist and belt-like bevel, I prefer to think of it as a Poker wearing a corset.
