A uniquely shaped piece as I've ever seen, here we see Mario Grandi having a bit of fun and playing alchemist. But as any mixer of potions will tell you, there's always a chance of something going deadly wrong, so measure your portions carefully. Grandi took note of this, but being the confident artisan that he is, decided to play with extremes. At once, the pipe comes on as a Rhodesian in bowl, but then elongates to length of a Churchwarden through its bamboo stem. Looking at this piece, my brain wants to compartmentalize the aesthetic to traditional Japanese, but at the same time, the underlying Italian robustness and flair defy any such notion. What's a pipe lover to do but sit back and just a enjoy the thing for what it is, and not what I think it should be.
