Japanese Estates: Smio Satou Smooth Bent Dublin
Product Number: 004-007-0577
This strikes me as a particularly Danish composition from Mr. Satou, but the lines of the shank are so clearly his as to make it unmistakable. I love the shape, pulling elements from the Acorn, with the bowl extending below the line of the shank, and the Dublin, which defines the overall bowl shape. The rim is very gentle domed, with the surface being slightly longer than it is wide, giving it a distinct sense of forward motion. The grain is magnificent, with good flame grain encompassing the bowl, terminating into tight birdseye on the rim. As is the case with all of Satou's pipes, the piece is finished with urushi
, giving it a lustrous finish that will only improve with time and that never requires buffing (indeed, should never be buffed).
