American Estates: McGimpsey Sandblasted Fig

Product Number: 004-009-5855

The mid-'00s brought quite a proliferation of independent American pipe makers to the forefront of the market, Matt Brannon, the maker of McGimpsey pipes, riding in on that wave. Because the pipe's stamp reads '12', this is a good indicator that it is of his more recent work, since he does not use shape numbers; and although the piece is relatively late for Mr.Brannon, and he only really has a pittance of experience of other, more 'seasoned' carvers, it still shows a great deal of talent and potential within the shaping - and besides that, it's a rather ambitious shape to attempt, the 'Fig' barely even made by makers. But having little frame of reference didn't stop him from including the shape's touchstone features: the canted Acorn bowl, Cutty spur, and Dublin-esque gesture. It's presented in a nice finish, as well, soaked in a thorough, honey-blonde stain, atop a well-blasted stummel.
