Stever Weiner had earned quite a bit of recognition before his untimely death in 2002; a passing made all the more unfortunate by the fact that it came just before American pipemakers in general began gaining greater recognition. He was a student of the renowned Mike Butera, and that was something that really showed not only in his approach to shaping and finishing, but in quality of design and engineering as well. The stamping on this piece, "02097", indicates that it was the 20th pipe he made in 1997, right about at the halfway point between his winning his first award, "Best Pipemaker" at the 1991 C.O.R.P.S. show, and his tragic passing.
