American wunderkind, Abe Herbaugh, cites the new wave American shaping aesthetic as his principle carving inspiration, and his first major pipe purchase was a Rad Davis. Looking at this immensely appealing sandblasted bent Apple, I definitely see a good deal of Rad influence, as well as a lot of elements found in 'early Rad' executions. In this presentation, Abe shows a wonderful affinity for both the spherical and ovoid forms, as well as the creation of impeccable transitions between the two. The quality of the sandblasted grain is outstanding (simply no other word for it) and the burnt umber and russet stains push the visual weight of that grain to an even higher apex. Though compact, this amiable & alluring Apple fills this describer's paw in a fine manner and, from that vantage, the smooth shank-end and rim prove to be perfect finishing touches.
