Well, this is something different. Here Ichi Kitahara appears to have taken a shape concept right in line with the established organic, flourishing aspects of the Japanese school, then detailed it in a precise, controlled style more reminiscent of industrial design. Combining two such strongly contrasting approaches might sound like a recipe for disaster, and, in less competent hands, I suppose it very likely would be. Ichi nails it, however, producing an articulate and well-balanced freehand that stands out not just in comparison to the Japanese school in general, but amongst his own creations as well.
