A Kitahara Elephant’s Foot never fails to impress. While the artist’s interpretations of the esoteric form are staggering in their breadth, there are always aspects to the execution that could only be ‘Kitahara-san’. Perusing our archives, while Ichi has created many killer pachyderm paws for us, to my tastes, this is the finest one that we have placed on site.
The body is a poignantly graceful amphora whose crown lilts rearward, towards the lucky smoker, and from that vantage the eye is rewarded with cascades of angel-hair on the rim, as well as the top of the shank. The side panels are gracile, to the point of being evocative of a ballerina in the ‘fifth position’, and are absolute mirrors of each other. Glancing at the front of the bowl, it really isn’t a far leap to imagine that the beautifully rounded bulge is a result of all the birdseye contained within, is it? Wow, I just balanced this beauty using the foot and bit, and it’s reasonably stable. Bravo, Ichi.
