Yes, this startlingly tiny, poster-child of the Zen āto
(Zen art) school of pipe making is titled correctly – it is a reverse Calabash. As if creating a Nautilus, featuring a full reverse curl continuing all the way to the front of the bowl, wasn’t ambitious enough, Ping Zhan incorporates a Blowfish bowl – right down to a gorgeous center bevel and nicely offset twin side panels - AND
, it’s a reverse Calabash.
Dynamic, ambitious, and challenging on a number of levels, the body of this Nautilus is also a reminder that complexity needn’t be an enemy of visual cohesion; there is a fine unity here to accompany all of that perfectly patterned grain. That said, due to the angle required to create a reverse-bash in this amiable aquatic, I find the angle and curve of the stem a touch problematic (pretty much vertical, so anticipate needing to handle much like a tiny Oom-Paul).
