Five and a half inches long, and yet weighing a smidge less than 40 grams, this Thile straight Bulldog features not only a finely balanced aesthetic of tradition and restrained modernity, but a subtle, lesser-seen expansion ring atop the upper bead. This “tiny” element imparts an understated nod towards the Calabash, not so much as an overt homage to the shape, but in lending a discrete amount of visual gravitas to a fine bowl. The forward tilt of the bowl not only adds a decent amount of “speeder” aspect to the composition, it actually improves that all-critical paw experience. The line which bisects the fore-of-shank/back of the bowl to the front of the heel creates an impressive sense of stability, when crooked in the index finger, as well as when held conventionally. The shape, the grain, the cumberland (that amazing price).... Nice.
