Boris Starkov has been compared to Maigurs Knets in terms of the creativity and beauty of his briars - no small praise, especially for one still so young. Like the Belle Epoque-inspired Maigurs, Boris also mixes his work between complex, gracefully flowing freehands and his own reinterpretations of the traditional shapes, the latter ranging from Danish-classic in style to the inventive Fibanacci designs
, with their curling, curving shanks. Even in the wildest creations, he is known for producing stellar smoking qualities surprising even to those well-experienced in enjoying briars made by some of the world’s most revered artisans.
Starkov keeps production small, concentrating on design refinement and high quality of execution, resulting in great demand and a long waiting list on commissions; as such we count ourselves very fortunate to have his work. Much of his earliest efforts were directed towards copies and recreations of Bo Nordh shapes – showing no little amount of daring and ambition, there. Having now seen what he can do firsthand, I’d say that spirit has paid off, and in spades.
