I'm not surprised here. By what? The shape. Previous to her introduction to pipemaking, Kikuchi created a series of carved wooden art objects, the art of which lay focused on the smooth, comforting presence they provided in hand. In other words, a presence not unlike that which this seamlessly, softly contoured pipe provides in hand. Oh, it is a lovely design to the eye as well, of course, with its gentle lines, beautiful finish, lovely flame and birdseye, and discrete silver accent - don't get me wrong. But all that having been said, this is still a briar that belongs in hand if you're going to fully appreciate it.
