Sometimes the perfect shape for a given block of briar will come to an artisan like a Jovian thunderbolt, an epiphany, a revelation, and a few frenzied hours/days later (Voila!) a pipe is created... and then there are the others, and this sweet Davidson surfing Volcano is one of those 'others'.
To be clear, Adam always intended this beauty to be a surfing Volcano; indeed he began this shape in Jeff Gracik's workshop back in 2010. Once home, he set the pipe on the shelf to let his back-brain continue to work on the ultimate outcome. As time passed, he applied a little tweak here, a bit of sanding there, until he finally arrived at a form that passed his notoriously fussy standards. In some ways evocative of Mt. Fuji, as depicted in the famous Hokusai series, and featuring mesmerizing oceanic touches within the gentle left-to-right curve of the 'surfboard', this briar is as playful and thought-provoking as its grain is magnificent.
