Jeremy and I mulled over this Armentrout batch a bit, and we both came to a certain conclusion regarding this piece. It was this: That while it takes a little getting used to the high-lifting stem he's used here (and in a few other briars we've seen), after spending a bit of time with it, we concluded that Nathan has hit on something. I kept trying to picture this Billiard with a stronger bend to the stem, and while a more typical, tried-and-true s-curve would have been created, the shape would have lost a certain airy grace about it. It would have been like seeing the famous Rolls Royce Spirit of Ecstasy
with her hands folded modestly in her lap. The magic, as it were, would have been sacrificed.
