Becker: Sandblasted Strawberry Wood Tomato (Four Clubs)
Product Number: 002-007-0570
At the beginning of 2011 CPCC Show, after many months of previous experimentation, Paolo Becker expressed his belief in strawberry wood as a pipe material in the most concrete manner possible: he handed out (yes, gave away) many pipes crafted from this cousin of the heath to collectors, and asked for a candid evaluation after a few days of smoking. "Lighter", "More absorbent", and "You have a real winner here" were the answers he received, and the CPCC is one incredibly tough house to perform in.
At the risk of sounding as if I just morphed into a character from Fast Times at Ridgemont High, if I had to sum up the character of this Tomato's grain in one word, it would be "gnarly". Well, look at every aspect of the grain — the birdseye on the rim/heel and top/bottom of the shank — the crazy rings around the equator: it's gnarly, am I right? Then we have Paolo's amazing acumen in matters of shaping and proportionality, not to mention his fine election on the stem material. Yet another winner from Becker.
