Butz-Choquin: Versailles (1601) (9mm)

Product Number: 002-010-0730

The Palace of Versailles, simply referred to as Versailles by the French people, started as a hunting lodge of Louis XIII but was then transformed and extended by his son Louis XIV who installed the Court and the government of France there in 1682. Up until the French Revolution, a line of kings succeeded each other, each taking his turn to embellish the Palace. An immense and decadently extravagant royal château in the Île-de-France region, the grounds are surrounded by stylized English and French gardens, and the interior is filled with rooms at the pinnacle of decadence, like the Galeries des Glaces, or Hall of Mirrors, characterized by 17 wide, arcaded mirrors opposite 17 windows; glass chandeliers hang from its arched, ornately painted ceiling, and gilded statues and reliefs border its walls. Really, every detail of its construction meticulously crafted to glorify the king.

In a way, the palace is a supreme symbol of royal absolutism, and is generally considered to be one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful, achievements of 18th-century French art. This Versailles is meant to exemplify the luxury of its namesake, embodying its superior craftsmanship through its French style bowl (which, like Versailles, bears markings of English influence) and zebra-wood accent, conjuring up the vast, gilded halls of its interior, in its burnished and bold contrast stain.
