1. Any process of formation or growth; development.
2. A product of such a development; something evolved.
Clearly discernible within the Caminettos which have appeared on the site for the past half year or so, while still creating those marvelous, familiar shapes which “brought them to the dance”, Caminetto is also now a company on the move – a firm in the process of growing, evolving, “becoming”. Originally rendered in petrified kuari, a type of evergreen tree native to New Zealand (here before you in briar), and the design a collaboration between Tommy Ascorti and lauded Italian artist, Mr. Savethewall, this stunner is the embodiment of the new Caminetto outlook, right down to its name: Evolution.
Referring to the shape as intriguing might be the understatement of the month: to my eye, the shape is highly evocative of the work of Takeo Arita, save a small amount of shift from Tokyo to Streamline Moderne. From the front of the Superchief body, through the wind-cheating, subtle arc of the top of the composition, right on to the half-button of the bit, this design speaks of mankind’s faith in a better future through progress, an attitude which (arguably) found its epoch in the roaring 20s. The grain is both superior and matches the composition to perfection; bold, crossgrain striations circumnavigating the entirety of the vertical axis, and (Man!) some truly amazing birdseye on the side. Are you ready for the future? Caminetto certainly is.
