I once read a science fiction novel (Hyperion
, I believe) in which the author described a particular shape, a long, steamlined fuselage with some fins stuck at the bottom end, as being not a spaceship, but "SPACESHIP"; the very image of a spaceship as had become ingrained in the distant-future human mind, as recognizable in form and line as four fingers and a thumb sticking out of a flat palm. G.L. likewise recently described the straight Billiard as "PIPE", for it is the very image of a pipe, the shape even those who've never smoked one or even known someone who smoked one will recognize, regardless of how much it may very in proportions, specifics of line, or scale. What we find here is distinctly Italian in the broad, smooth, and masculine form of its bowl, and distinctly diminutive in scale, and yet, true enough, there's no mistaking it as anything but PIPE, and classic PIPE at that.
