Castello: Flame Pot (LOB) (08/20)

Product Number: 002-386-1440

In the beginning, there was the Epoca. Carlo Scotti smiled and the collecting world said "It is good". In 2000, from the Epoca the Flame was created; Franco smiled, and the collecting world said "Whoot!" Recently, the Flame underwent a transition itself, with the Flame 2 moving away from the fully carved, flame-relief-upon-a-beautifully-grained-body to one where the flames were represented by etchings within the body (Flame used the body of the pipe as non-space, Flame 2 used the flames as non-space, there will be a quiz later), and the collecting world said "Pretty cool, but what happened to the flame? You know, the ones which featured an Epoca relief, not a flame rustication?"

Well, unless your retailer has some insanely good relationships with Castello, as well as perfect timing, this is one of the very few most of us are likely to see. While purchased at the IPCPR of 2014, and bearing a limited edition stamp of 08/20, we also have another IPCPR Castello in house that bears an (well, IPCPR) 08/20 — this ain't an IPCPR Castello — as the term has come to be causally used. The presence of three initials on the stamp will supply you with a hint on how to solve this conundrum: LOB (Legendary Old Briar). This insanely beautiful (and rare) Flame pot, was crafted from a recently reacquired batch of briar which hailed from decades back. While all of that briar was exceptional (consider the quality of heath which was available eons ago), very few would even attempt creating a presentation such as this. Recommended? If you are an avid collector of things Castello, and, due to either earlier circumstances, or being late to that game (in the largest manner of speaking) — oh yeah.
