Though we have had the pleasure of representing Chris Asteriou for roughly a year and a half now, this is the first chance that I have had to describe his briars and this is the first pipe to step up to the metaphorical plate. Already, I find myself thinking “Louie, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship”
I have had a decades long love affair with the Zulu shape, and am extremely picky about them. The shaping of this Asteriou interpretation is achingly beautiful, and could serve as a template for all Zulus born and yet to be born (the shape, not the people – but you probably knew that). If there has ever been a finer, more complementary combination of stain and stem, I have yet to run across it, and as far as the grain runs? One could do far worse than an angel-hair straight and flame grain combination, boasting a near universal coverage (save for the pinpoint birdseye on the top and back of the shank). Given the investment needed to add it to your collection, if I didn’t recommend it, someone should recommend me to an ophthalmologist.
