The up-turned shank extension may be a little unusual, but I have to say that is a pretty nice bit of dark bamboo that's been used for it. More significant, however, is the downright beautiful briar up front - as understated as the rich, deep, and dusky contrast stain Massimiliano has used here may be, there's no mistaking that the birdseye presented fore and aft on the bowl is simply spectacular. And the flame grain on either flank is nothing to be ashamed of either, for that matter. Of course, a pipe isn't just for looking pretty, and when it comes to the more functional end of things, this Shield design proves very smooth and natural in hand, as well as quite deep of chamber.
