Il Duca: Barone Sandblasted Morta Rhodesian with Bamboo (B3)
Product Number: 002-427-0258
Max Rimensi's no stranger when it comes to incorporating exotic materials into his designs. From strawberry wood stummels to bamboo-infused shanks, we've seen just about everything from the Italian carver, including a fair share of morta pipes such as this Rhodesian. His versatility (not only in material selection, but in his shaping style as well) is quite evident in this piece. The shape itself is quite hard to pin down. It sports a wide, plump bowl somewhat reminiscent of the low-slung Tomato, yet there's also a well defined disc-like bevel below the rim that would suggest a Rhodesian shape — albeit a rather eccentric one. The smooth curve to the heel and subtle sinuous nature of the piece at times seem positively Danish. Other times, it moves further into the Japanese school exuding a sense of zen
from the rhythm of its dark bamboo shank and the overall symmetry of the design. Finished here in a fine sandblast and topped with a warm cumberland stem, it's yet another prime example of Max's expert shaping and masterful execution.
