Il Duca: Barone Sandblasted Chimney Acorn (B2)
Product Number: 002-427-0257
Hardly your typical Italian pipemaker, Max Rimensi has quite an eclectic approach to shaping. Ranging from the neoclassical, to the modern, to flourishing Freehand designs, he's produced a variety of shapes in different sizes and from different schools. I'm not quite sure where exactly Max drew his inspiration for this piece though. The sinuous sweeping treatment of the shank and transition seem to point to the Danes, but there's something unmistakably Italian about it as well.
Either way, Max's design choices leave for one striking profile. There's an almost bullet-like taper to the extra-tall bowl, coming to a point at the sharp Pickaxe-esque spur at the heel. Its long, upward curved shank is relatively trim, yet ends with an elegant flair into a ring of polished briar. As a Barone, the stummel is finished in a light sandblast and warm reddish stain. With a bowl this tall, that just means more surface to show of this briar's wave after waver of stunning ring grain.
