About This Pipe

It's common knowledge that the second digit of a Dunhill's stamping indicates stem style; "1" for a tapered bit, and "2" for a saddle bit. What people often neglect to mention is that, though considerably rare, there are other numbers beyond "1" and "2". "3" and "4" are rather hard to define - they tend to be catch-all for "alternate" configurations, whether that means a downward-curving Prince-like stem, or a bamboo Cavalier arrangement. "5" is, as far as I know, non-existent. As for "6", though it is pretty hard to come by, it is also conspicuously easy to define: It means what you have at hand is a cool-smoking, long-stemmed Churchwarden rendition of one of Dunhill's classic English shapes.
