Alex Florov’s rendition of the long-shanked Acorn has become a classic in its own right. While remaining true to that distinctive form, Florov has opted for a few subtle differences in this particular specimen. The forward cant of the bowl imparts a leaner and more elegant profile, while the slighter than usual taper of the shank lends a sense of visual (as well as physical) balance to the piece. I’m likewise particularly fond of the stem work on this pipe, which not only features Florov’s first-rate slotting, but also mirrors the line on the back of the bowl perfectly. Although certainly one of Florov’s more reserved shapes, the pipe showcases the same attention to detail and passion for carving that guides his more complex pieces.
