A signature shape from Alex, sporting his top grade no less, sets us up to expect a lot of this piece. And the pipe delivers. Lithe, elegant and harmonious, the long stem, sporting a mastodon ivory inlay, transitions into a short shank that explodes into the calla lily shape. A line emerges from the left side of the shank, traversing the back of the bowl and wrapping itself into the rim on the right side, echoing the shape of the calla lily as its single petal wraps over itself at the back (or top depending on perspective) as this Georgia O'Keeffe painting
Terminating into superb birdseye and sanded plateau on the rim, the bowl is awash in beautiful flame grain, highlighted strikingly by the light orange contrast stain. The piece possesses an organic vitality, established by the shape and accentuated by the grain, that is nothing short of extraordinary. There is no question as to why this became Alex Florov's signature shape; it is one of those pipe shapes that just needed to be and a great pipe maker came along and discovered it. And paired with this grain, it's nothing short of sublime.
