The Cherrywood has long been one of my favorite sitter forms. Shy of the classic Poker, it’s hard to find a more stable sitter, and it seems to lend itself to far greater breadth of interpretations than its more staid cousins. Unlike the Poker, however, I rarely see Cherrywoods run smaller than (say) a medium. Tom Eltang created a petite Poker and it became a perennial best seller, but where are the sub-one oz. Cherrywoods? At the moment, right in front of you. The tapered cylinder of the bowl looks almost like something you would find near a forest clearing and the smooth, softly domed, birdseye-laden rim adds charming hints of a mushroom. Gabriele went softer, more ‘Danish’ with this sandblast, coaxing out a spectacular grain with a minimum of wood removal; to my mind a perfect choice, an uber-craggy blast on such petite platform would have diminished much of its spirit.
