Given Gian Gamboni's involvment as a pipemaker for Massimo Musico's "Foundation" brand, I can't help but suspect he's been influenced by Paolo Becker somewhere along the way. (Fritz Becker, Paolo's father, and Giorgio Musico, Massimo's father, were the "Becker" and "Musico" behind the old Becker & Musico marque.) To be more to the point, it's Gian's use of fine, elongated, well-defined transitions as prominent features in some of his more curious designs that inspires this suspicion, though Gamboni also seems to blend some Russian pipemaking influences into it all as well. Regardless of how he did actually come about this approach, I do have to say that Gian Gamboni is definitely carving out some very distinctive, artistic pieces - with this "Hole in One"-grade smooth Acorn being a particularly notable example.
