Gamboni: Smooth Diplomat (Stableford)
Product Number: 002-575-0009
You may be wondering why we called this pipe a Diplomat, when the classic definition of a Diplomat is an oval-shanked variation of the Prince or Author shapes. The reason is pretty simple: because Gian Gamboni called it a Diplomat, and as the pipemaker who made this pipe, we prefer to respect his wishes. And, just to play devil's advocate, I can't help but wonder if he's in fact playing around with expectations, for while this sleek, organic, beautifully grained little number does sport a finely-proportioned, and most definitely round shank, it also features a bowl which takes on a decidedly oval cross-section as it proceeds towards its leading edge - the precise opposite end from where we'd expect the "oval" component in a Diplomat shape to be.
