Gamboni: Sandblasted Apple (Putting Green)
Product Number: 002-575-0017
Gian Gamboni's approach to pipemaking is an interesting one, foregoing the established traditional Italian, and even Pesaro styles, and instead presenting shaping that strikes the eye as an artistic blend of Paolo Becker and Russian artisan influences, as well as the frequent appearance of strongly contrast-stained sandblast finishes like you might expect from Peder Jepessen or Werner Mummert (albeit in more subdued hues and shades). And as strange an admixture as it all may sound, especially from an Italian pipemaker, he makes it all work, as we see in this surprisingly lively straight Apple, with its sleek saddle stem, finely flared shank, elongated, yet delicate-looking transition, and high-set bowl, smoothly rounded up top, yet sporting a jaunty, sleek, low-profile spur at the heel.
