Peter Heding: Rusticated Apple with Boxwood Ring (Silver)
Product Number: 002-362-0147
Rustication is not something every higher-tier artisan pipemaker will go through with; it's a lot more work than sandblasting to produce a pipe that will likely sell at similar, often lower price. But sometimes it just fits a certain shape, as is the case with this plump, compact fireplug of a straight Apple and it's deep-black, lightly-textured finish. The briar likely lacked the grain to justify the price of a high-end smooth pipe, but the consistency of texture made possible by working the surface over methodically with a hand tool has made for a look better fitting to such a dense shape than a meandering ring-grain would have either.
