In the words of the character, Annie Savoy, in the 1997 cinematic classic “Bull Durham”, ”Oh My!” While most Elephant's Feet, in general, tend to be larger pieces, Peter Heding's path with the shape usually leans toward the more diminutive. Stepping in at nearly half a foot in length and two inches in height, this pretty pachyderm’s paw would lean towards the bigger side of the Elephant’s Feet that we have seen from Peter, but still well within his general size aesthetic.
Dr. Heding has a marvelous feel for the Elephant’s Foot; whether with/without bamboo, large or petite, traditional or playful, his interpretations never fail to amaze and delight. With this Gold Grade, Peter elected to play down the sinuous curves on the front and side panel that we have seen in some of his pads in the past, in favor of a more Shield-like flavor, and the combination of a broad shank and a wicked-large ferrule of of handsome horn provides a muscular ‘arm’ to back up the beautiful bulwark. While the cross-grain on the side panels is nothing to sneeze at, the striations on the rim are exquisitely contrasted and tighter than a team of sumo wrestlers riding in a clown car.
