Peter Heding’s shaping can often be quite creative, but I think I like his work best when he’s adhering pretty closely to the Danish classics, as he is in this smooth Fish. At first glance this pipe could easily be mistaken for an S. Bang. The well-balanced and voluptuous shaping works perfectly to accentuate the natural beauty of the briar, especially the lush birdseye on each side of the shank and bowl. Heding has brought definition to the shape by extending a flowing line from the stem all the way down the shank and through to the rim of the bowl. This piece is a truly beautiful offering from a maker who is fast becoming one of my favorites.
