Larrysson: Rusticated Tree Bark Cherrywood with Plateau
Product Number: 002-456-0039
Paul Hubartt is selective about the plateau briar used for his "Tree Bark" designs; it has to be soft enough to allow for good control when he's hand-carving the striated rustication, but also dense enough that it won't take a light sandblast (which he uses to bring out hints of the underlying ring grain, creating a more organic texture) without chewing up the hand-carved texture as well. Layer this all over a distinctly naturalistic shape, with a gentle, rolling flare towards both base and rim, and the result is a charming, earthy aesthetic, in a solid sitter that's easy in hand as well.
