This Maigurs Knets piece is one of the most stylized and complex variations on the classic Egg that I’ve seen, but it’s certainly a fetching one. The canted, oval-shaped bowl and flared shank together reflect Knets’ distinctive ability to shape clean, graceful lines. And yet the real gem on this piece is the grain, which is almost perfectly oriented. On the left and right side of the bowl and shank, we find tight and luscious birdseye, while the front and back of the bowl are adorned with horizontal flame grain. The shaping, form, and deep red/auburn contrast stain all work together to highlight the natural beauty of the briar. The piece is compact, yet elegant and fits perfectly in hand. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the pipe sports a deep, Stack-like chamber, which promises to deliver a smoke as satisfying as the pipe itself.
