Peter Matzhold makes smooth and sandblasted pipes. There is
considerable overlap in smooth and sandblast grading, with better
sandblasts reaching well into the smooth range.
His standard grading runs from A through G, though most of his pipes are
made in the C, D, E and F grades. That said, the A and B grade are very
rarely used on current production Matzhold pipes.
Sandblasted pipes are usually C grades, with some D grades. Smooth
pipes usually start at D grade.
Grading criteria include cleanliness of briar (the fewer sandpits the
better), straightness of the grain and harmonization of grain and shape.
For his very top pieces, he also has a CU grade, named for his two
children, Caspar and Una.
