Peter Matzhold is one of those artisans that sets really, really high standards for himself, with the result being that sometimes it's a wonder just what minute little detail somewhere kept one particular briar or another from getting a top-grade "CU" stamp. (Or to put it another way: these are the artisans whose "standard" pipes are often on par with, or exceed, the highest grades of most other marques or artisans.) There's no "CU" stamp here, for example, but what there is, regardless of that, is a finely-balanced design, smooth, perfectly controlled lines, drop-dead gorgeous flame grain, a precisely fitted and polished boxwood accent, and a superbly gracile slip of a stem. And all of that, it surely must be said, does fit exactly with the kind of standards we expect from Matzhold as an artisan, and only because those are the kind of standards we've always known him to hold his work to.
