Peter Matzhold: Smooth Bent Freehand with Boxwood (CU)
Product Number: 002-290-0269
Peter Matzhold has produced something a bit different here, not only in terms of a shape more dramatic in its freehand alterations than is usual for his work, but also in the handling of the grain as well. And, as we would expect from an artisan of his reputation, he's made both of those things work together; the elongated forward face and crisp leading edge of this bent Apple not only makes for an interesting bit of design, but also serves both to clearly define a border between the plentiful birdseye that covers the right flank, and the broad band of beautiful flame grain the rolls up from the briar's underside, right up to the rim on the left. The result is asymmetric, yet precise, harmonious in its play with the briar's natural beauty, yet evidence of perfect control over the definition of form and line.
