While his signature flying edges are definitely wild by nature, the shapes Michal Novak dresses with them can vary from the very freehand to the traditional. In this case, he appears to be playing with some strong contrasts, taking a rather conservative bent Dublin (albeit with quite a broad, muscular transition), and turning it into something strikingly dramatic with a particularly high-profile, swiftly winding example of his "edges". (Yes, there is actually only one on this pipe - it just covers a lot of ground.) On top of that, he's rendered it all in an especially choice piece of briar, with excellent flame grain and birdseye alike.
