About This Pipe
I wandered into Sykes' office recently and he gave me that 'great pipes are here' look (it's kind of like Eskimos having lots of words for snow) and pointed down. On his desk were a small handful of pipes from Nanna Ivarsson. And this one is the first to have caught my eye.
Overlaid on the clean, arcing interior line that is so central to all of Nanna's work, is one of the most pleasing horns I have ever encountered. The rim is softly rounded to the point of being voluptuous. A wee bit more briar shows to the rear than the fore of the same, which is balanced to perfection by the concavity of the rear of the bowl. The ever-so-slight thickening of the shank, as it moves to the mount, also adds balance and cohesion to the overarching composition. I have never been a huge fan of horns, but darned if Nanna hasn't made me a believer.
